Founded in 1967, this charcoal-grilled steakhouse has been in the top five priciest restaurants for more than a decade. Obviously, Michelin-starred. Its existence cements Tokyo’s place at the top, as the city with the highest number of famous (and pricey) restaurants. The restaurant only seats 22 people and is located at the end of a long hallway in the basement of an office building. It’s famous for serving the world’s best heirloom Tajima beef. Only pure-bred breeds raised under certain conditions are used for the specially selected Tajima beef dishes. The chefs season the meat with only salt and pepper, skewer it, and grill it in a kiln using Kishu Binchotan charcoal. Some of the other popular meals served here include one whole 5 kg smoked salmon which takes a week to prepare. Over 200 brands of wine are available to complement the meal, mainly from the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France. The price tag for meals comes to about $550 per person.
