Most modern Burmese cats are the descendants of a cat called Wong Mau that was brought from Burma to the USA in 1930 and mated with an American Siamese. There are two kinds of closely related Burmese, the American, and the European. Burmese cats can live from 10 to 17 years and have a low maintenance profile, good with kids, dogs, seniors, and other cats—great for first-time cat owners. Diabetes is a risk for this breed, but they are generally healthy. They are a stocky size, heavier than they look, weighing about 7 kg, and have been called “a brick wrapped in silk” by their humans that pick them up! They have also been called the “Velcro cat” as they really like to be with their people, often following them around, and sometimes experiencing separation anxiety if left alone for too long. They are definitely a happy lap-cat!
