Instagram vs. Reality: 33 Dream Destinations That Are Only Dream Destinations in the Photo

The world’s most beautiful travel photos are usually born in a single, very precisely planned second. What happens just left and right of that frame, the tourists, the trash, the mud, the empty alleyways that are in fact heaving with people, Instagram quietly leaves out. On top of that, many of these images are simply no longer accurate. Climate change, heatwaves and mass tourism have shifted reality even further over the past few years. Here are thirty-three places where the gorgeous photo and the actual experience sit unusually far apart.

1. Cala Comte, Ibiza

The famous turquoise bay is real, just very precisely cropped. Pivot the camera one meter to the side and you get a carpet of beach towels covering several hundred package tourists, sangria pitchers included. Anyone who actually wants the water to themselves needs to be there at six in the morning. In peak summer the thermometer now climbs to 38 degrees on a regular basis, and even that turquoise water feels less Caribbean and more like warm soup these days.
