#12 Satellite Island, Tasmania – $3,550 per night

Once a wild, unkempt home of a hermitic writer, 34-hectare Satellite Island is located off the coast of Tasmania in the Great Southern Land, Australia. It is owned by a Melbourne couple that inherited it from their painter and writer uncle, Ian Alstergren, who was a leader in the salmon-farming industry. Discovered in 1792 during a French expedition, Satellite Island was originally used as an observatory for the night sky. The small landmass is home to an impressive array of local shellfish and native bird life including rare, white-breasted sea eagles and red-breasted robins. Satellite Island is well known among luxury (but active) holidaymakers, for its outdoor activities—including birdwatching, kayaking, and diving. The Island is privately owned and can be hired for exclusive use, accommodating groups of up to 12 people at $3,550 per night.
