King Philip IV of Spain (1605–1665) had a daughter, Margarita Teresa, who got engaged to Emperor Leopold I of Austria in 1664 and this 35.56-carat diamond was part of her opulent dowry.  More than three centuries later, renowned jeweler Laurence Graff struck a very lucrative deal when he purchased the Wittelsbach diamond for $23.4 million in 2008 and then resold the (now recut to 31.06-carats) gem in 2011 to the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa for the stupendous cost of $80 million!
